Meet Abdulrahim Mohammed, a young environmentalist and climate activist keen on combating desertification and climate change in the northeastern part of Nigeria.

He was born on 11th March 1998 in Damaturu, the capital city of Yobe State, Northeastern part of Nigeria. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Geography from Yobe State University, a National Diploma in Surveying and Geo-Informatics from the federal polytechnic Damaturu, a Diploma in Information Communication Technology from Yobe State College of Agriculture Science and Technology Gujba, a Registered member of the Nigerian Environmental Society 2021 present respectively.

He demonstrates various skills in Climate Change Awareness, Natural Resources Management, Field Survey/Data Collection Experience, Nursery Plants Operation, Tree Planting Experience, Diverse Plants Knowledge, Hardscaping/Landscaping design, Plantation Management, Safe Chemical Handling, Pest/insects prevention and Control Experience, and also a Computer Literate.

Abdulrahim Mohammed said that the idea and passion for environmentalism and climate advocacy were ignited during his Student Industrial Working Experience Scheme (SIWES) at the Department of Forestry and Wildlife, Ministry of Environment, Yobe State.

“I acknowledge the gesture, knowledge and training I received from the department and school in general. There, I established a Nursery Plant named “Gaddafi Nursery & Landscaping Services” producing thousands of different varieties of trees for community engagement service, tree-planting distributions and climate change awareness among school children’ for behavioural change towards environmental protection across Yobe State,” he said.

“So far, in my efforts, I have conducted successful tree-planting exercises and climate change awareness in various schools/communities across Yobe State. I have planted more than 8,000 seedlings across the State and also empowered the school children/community members with survival skills by teaching them practical aspects of garden establishment focused on smart agriculture,” added Abdulrahim.

“My overall goal and objectives are to fight against environmental degradation, climate challenges and other related problems. I hope to make the people of the Northeastern part of Nigeria to be more aware and conscious of Environmental Problems, as well as to broaden their awareness and understanding of Climatic Challenges, their effects, and possible future solutions,” he said.

“While coping with and adopting climate change solutions like climate awareness and tree planting, issues such as weather conditions, irrigation and the lack of adequate nursery plants tools hinder the smooth progress of my activities. I will be much delighted to receive any assistance available to support me,” he concluded.
