The Climate and Sustainable Development Network (CSDevNet) is delighted to celebrate the graduation of one of its network members, Aliyu Umar Sadiq, from the prestigious Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Programme in Environmental Sciences, Policy and Management (MESPOM).

The fully funded Erasmus Mundus programme is delivered collaboratively by four leading European universities: the University of Manchester (United Kingdom), Lund University (Sweden), Central European University (Austria), and the University of the Aegean (Greece).

Aliyu, Founder of Ecocykle, has been an active member of the CSDevNet network since 2019. Through the network, he has served as a Young Digital Activist, Community Resource Person, and participant in several climate justice campaigns organized under the platforms of CSDevNet and the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA).

Reflecting on his journey, Aliyu expressed profound appreciation to CSDevNet for providing the platform that shaped his career in environmental advocacy.

“When I was a departmental president at the University of Abuja, CSDevNet was one of the first organizations I partnered with to implement environmental projects on campus. Those early opportunities nurtured my passion for environmental leadership and inspired me to establish Ecocykle after graduation. Through CSDevNet, I was given the opportunity to learn, experiment with different initiatives, and grow as a young professional. I remain deeply grateful to the network’s leadership and proud to be a member.”

During his Erasmus Mundus studies, Aliyu recorded several remarkable achievements. Most recently, his international team emerged as the Global Winner of the 2025 Schneider Electric Go Green Competition after developing an innovative clean-energy circular irrigation solution designed to strengthen climate resilience in African agriculture.

The programme also provided him with opportunities to work with leading international organizations, including the European Environmental Bureau (EEB), where he contributed to policy-relevant research on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for electronic waste management in Nigeria and broader circular economy policy discussions within the European Union.

With this milestone, Aliyu joins the alumni communities of four internationally recognized European universities, further strengthening the growing global network of Nigerian environmental professionals.

Aliyu is an environment and development professional with over seven years of experience advancing climate action, circular economy, waste management, and environmental policy across Africa and Europe. He is a member of several international professional bodies, including the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA) and the International Society for Industrial Ecology (ISIE).

His contributions to environmental sustainability and youth leadership have earned him numerous recognitions, including the 2025 Sir Cyril Taylor Young African Leaders Fellowship, the 2023 Green Skill Award, the 2022 Oxfam Youth Spotlight Award, recognition as the 2021 Best African Youth for Environment Fellow, nomination for The Future Awards Africa 2021, and the 2021 Global Recycling Hero Award.

CSDevNet congratulates Aliyu Umar Sadiq on this outstanding academic achievement and celebrates his continued commitment to advancing environmental sustainability, climate justice, and youth leadership. His journey reflects the transformative impact of investing in young leaders and demonstrates the important role that civil society networks play in nurturing the next generation of changemakers.
