Empowering Tupechi Youth: A Digital Leap for Climate Justice and Sustainable Development

In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at melding digital innovation with environmental stewardship, the Climate and Sustainable Development Network recently hosted a transformative sensitization, dedicated to equipping youth with the tools and knowledge needed for climate justice and sustainable development in Tupechi community Kuje Abuja.

The event was held on August 13, 2024 to mark the International Youth Day, the event marked a pivotal moment in the community’s journey towards a more sustainable future.

The Tupechi community, known for its rich cultural heritage and natural beauty, faces growing environmental challenges. Recognizing the need for a dynamic response, local leaders and experts orchestrated an engagement focused on leveraging digital technologies to address climate issues.

The activity core objective was to inspire and enable the youth to become proactive advocates for climate justice through digital platforms.

The day kicked off with an engaging opening session where Mr. Umoru Ameh, CSDevNet Finance and Admin Officer, gave his remarks and acknowledged the community for their acceptance and open heart to learn.

He stated that “the need for climate education for the community youth and how to protect their environment by practicing subsistence farming and the use of organic composites for crop farming”.

He delivered a compelling keynote address, emphasizing the urgent need for digital advocacy in combating climate change.

The program officer, Mr. Paul Joseph, underscored the use of social media as a tool for advocacy and making organic fertilizer with waste material around home.

He highlighted the environmental impact of climate change and the need to adopt measures like water conservation and harvesting for irrigation farming during the dry season.

His session underscored the power of digital communication in shaping public opinion and rallying support for climate initiatives.

During the visit, Mr. Emmanuel Lazarus a farmer, complained about the arising issues of herdsmen killing them at their farms; he urged the team to help look into it on how to draw the attention of the government to their aid. He said “our community needs intervention so we don’t lose all our farmlands and livelihood”.

The women leader noted that, they need assistance when it comes to organic fertilizer to help restore the soil nutrient to increase farm produce and also lack of access to clean water. He appreciated the team for their visit and hoped that further inventions would take place in the community.

The youth representative spoke about the high rate of unemployment faced by the youth in the community and pleaded for women empowerment training.

As a symbol of this partnership, CSDevNet donated tree seedlings and carried out a planting exercise, encouraging community participation and collective responsibility for their environment.

The event demonstrated the crucial role that youth can play in climate justice. The enthusiasm and dedication displayed by the community members highlighted a growing movement within Tupechi to address environmental challenges through modern digital solutions.

By empowering its youth with the skills and knowledge to harness digital tools, to enhance agricultural productivity, improve access to resources, and create new economic opportunities for youth and women.

Tupechi community is not only addressing immediate climate challenges but also paving the way for a more sustainable and engaged future.
