The Climate and Sustainable Development Network (CSDevNet), in collaboration with Green for Life Initiative and Federal University Lokoja (FUL), held a multi-stakeholder workshop in Kogi State on August 5, 2024.
The workshop aimed to build the capacity of women and youth on environmental rights and accountability.
It was attended by over 80 participants, including students, community leaders, youth groups, women’s groups, government agencies, academia, CSOs, and CBOs.
Mr. Steve Abuh, the National Network Coordinator of CSDevNet, delivered the welcome address. He highlighted the thematic areas of CSDevNet’s work in collaboration with over 300 NGOs and civil society organizations across Nigeria, which promote climate-friendly and equitable sustainable development.
He emphasized the importance of the workshop and encouraged participants to become protectors of the environment and change agents in their communities.
“The workshop aims to enhance community resilience through capacity building, early warning systems and promote environmental conservation through tree planting,” he remarked.
“It will also address environmental challenges by developing policies that integrate green growth principles into the national and sub-national policy frameworks,” He added.
He stressed that the workshop would enhance understanding and advocacy skills regarding environmental rights, educate communities on early warning systems for better disaster preparedness and response.
Prof. Olayemi Durotimi Akinwumi, Vice Chancellor of Federal University Lokoja, commended CSDevNet and its partners for choosing FUL as the venue for the event.
He highlighted the importance of embracing tree planting and supporting the green growth initiative to mitigate the effects of climate change and urged the participants to rise as ambassadors of the green growth initiative as environmental stewards dedicated to preserving the world for future generations.
He stated, “Your presence here underscores our collective commitment to cultivating a sustainable future for our community and beyond.”
“Biodiversity, particularly plant life, plays a crucial role in maintaining a healthy environment. Their contributions to meeting human needs and providing essential ecological services are invaluable,” he added.
Also speaking Prof. Tanko Dauda, Executive Director and Founder of Green for Life Initiative, welcomed the participants and expressed appreciation for the VC of the University and the Coordinator of CSDevNet. He decried the high rate of desertification in Nigeria due to the devastating effects of climate change.
The workshop included a tree planting activity, with participation from the Vice Chancellor, representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Environment, the Chief of Felele, and students of the university.
This initiative marked the beginning of the greening project for the university campus. Engaging sessions led by experts provided participants with valuable knowledge on advocating for environmental rights and accountability.
The collaborative spirit of the workshop, combined with practical initiatives such as the tree planting activity, underscored a shared commitment to a sustainable future. Participants were encouraged to act as ambassadors for environmental change, maintain cleanliness, and promote awareness within their communities.
In closing, Mr. Steve Abuh reiterated the workshop’s core objective of empowering individuals to become proactive change agents in their environments.
As the workshop concluded, the collective enthusiasm and dedication of all involved were evident, marking a promising step toward a greener and more sustainable future for Kogi State and beyond.
